Being out-of-the-box is cool but the most interesting things happen on the edges, in the eternal fight between here and there. For the next 30 days I'll be writing one Atomic Essay for . I'll share insights into innovation, design, and product-thinking. Let's go!👇🏽

I haven't done much creative writing in a long while but reading this summary of how to do it is making me want to dive back in. Great pointers.

That’s awesome! Makes a big difference to split the week into two. Also the lunch specials 😋

A relatively easy but overlooked way to decompress and spoil yourself: Take Wednesday off. And then do something you wouldn’t normally do. Spas are generally not busy mid-week. Same with brunch at that nice place that always has a line on weekends. Take next Wednesday off.

Late night thoughts: So much of the most important things in life are caught in between contradictions. e.g. - be patient vs be swift - be in the now vs plan ahead - money in hand vs compound your savings - be the best at what you do vs fake it till you make it Anything else?

Cautionary note: I recognize this can be very reductionist. I don't want to claim that compartmentalizing people is easy or necessary. But for me, it's helped me think about my own journey in my career. Please take it with ample salt 🧂

Most likely, we will all slip into and out of these roles throughout our careers. Make sure you recognize your drivers and motivations and those of the folks around you. By doing so, we can be kinder to ourselves and the people we work with.

3/ Support-driven This type find fulfillment when serving others and helping them grow. Typically called "mentors" or "cheerleaders". When experienced in a subject, they want to "give back". If you're managing them, involve them in hiring/mentoring/community activities.

2/ Intellect-driven These love geeking out on processes and ideas. Typically called "thinkers", "cerebral" or "visionary". They can build influence and a strategic place at the table. When managing them, make sure they are paired with doers + give them time AND deadlines!

1/ Craft-driven Focused on gaining technical skills. Typically called "builders" or "doers". Early in your career, this is likely what you should care most about. If you manage this person, give them clear goals, technical challenges, dev opportunities, and lots of feedback!

5/ Get to know your company. Devour the marketing docs your company has created, i.e landing page, webinars, blog posts. This will help you understand how the business has been positioning itself and what it considers most important.
