We fear people, ideas and things we don't know and we often hate what we fear. Which means we typically hate things we don't really know. Before you hate- ask yourself if you've taken the time to really understand that person, idea or thing.

I've always loved this quote but felt it was missing something... here's my revised version: "When your values are clear, [you're okay with failing frequently AND you stop caring what others think about you so much], decision making becomes easy." Easier said than done. 🙃

When we approach conversations as if we aren't (yet) on the same page as the other person, we get better outcomes. Navigating complexity / perception makes us think twice, LISTEN & seek to understand. If there IS a misunderstanding, communication = the tool to bridge that gap.

As a recovering people pleaser one of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that trying to please people LESS will make them MORE likely to respect and treat you better in the long run. Respectfully asking for what you want/need shows you actually trust & value yourself.

Becoming a more agile communicator will actually WIDEN the gap between you & poor communicators- making it appear more difficult / messy at first. If that’s your objection, you can bring them with you or purposely NOT improve yourself. Good luck justifying that second one 😉

A pervasive issue. Fancy tools, tech, formulas and diagrams won’t solve our problems. We’ve got to look for answers in different places.

As an over-thinker, the best thing you can do is take action. START. Do anything. Say what you’ve wanted to say. Put that idea out in the world. OVER-thinking implies thinking occurred which inherently means it’s probably OK. And if it isn’t yet- change, iterate and adapt.

Autonomy can help teach athlete's about how training effects them, but the control is not easy to let go of. In The Manual,Vol. 6, shares the why's & how's to how she added autonomy in training, & why she's never going back to "how things were"

Being open-minded, curious & receptive to opposing views AND having strong values / beliefs aren't mutually exclusive traits. Rather, the ability to constantly question and pressure test personal principles is an indicator of true intelligence.

A sense of humor, outside interests, the ability to not take oneself so seriously and divergent thinking are some of the most undervalued qualities in a leader. In order to inspire you must first relate to those you lead.

For the first time in my life I’m RE-reading a book. I know… The old me (a notorious information over-consumer) is shuddering at the thought. But guess what? Coming at foundational knowledge with fresh eyes and life experience makes it applicable in a whole new way. Go figure.
