Shoutout to my mentee who won the Distinguished Undergraduate Researcher Award that recognizes the achievements of outstanding undergrads who complete research leading towards a public presentation. Awesome way to end her time at LSU!

For those that think that fieldwork for marine scientists is all cocktails and sandy beaches, this is what this morning looked like for us, this isn't a whole lot of fun...

What phylum? There's no obvious mouth, foot, pharynx, or anything that would indicate a ventral surface. No pharyngeal basket, which leaves us where? is a hard guess. Captured via otter trawl, West Florida shelf @ 96m. They've been frozen and thawed 😕

While term "coral" may conjure up images of sunny tropical reefs, DYK that over half of known coral species live in deep, dark waters, w/ temps from 4-12°C? Here area few deepwater corals we've seen during our ocean exploration missions.

This Clavularia was seen during the Deep Connections 2019 expedition at approximately 1,060 m depth off the coast of Rhode Island. This is a stoloniferous octocoral that grows in ribbons and mats over rock or skeletons of coral or sponges. The purple color is due to a pigment in the soft tissue and the white is reflections from sclerites.
While exploring at approximately 808 meters (2,651 feet) depth off the east coast of Florida during the 2019 Southeastern U.S. Deep-sea Exploration, we came across this shingled tree coral (Candidella imbricata) and its numerous associates, including about 30 brittle stars and a squat lobster.
These large thickets of Lophelia pertusa coral were seen growing along the edges of large rock shelf overhangs at approximately 890 meters (2,920 feet) depth while exploring off the coast of South Carolina during the Windows to the Deep 2019 expedition.
A snake star entwined itself tightly around the branches of an octocoral as seen during the Deep Connections 2019 expedition.

My students went to see the CPRA Lower Mississippi River model and I think its safe to say they learned a lot about land loss in , but also were awed at how COOL this giant model is. If you haven't gone, you totally should! #science#marinebiology

The Spiny Sea Fan is one of the common species at Gray's Reef. These sea fans sometimes have other marine species living on them. Here a tunicate has found a roommate with the Sea Fan

Brits send more than 64m unnecessary emails every day. If every adult in the UK sent one fewer “thank you” email a day we would save more than 16,433 tonnes of carbon a year – equivalent to 81,152 flights to Madrid or taking 3,334 diesel cars off the road.
