    I am thoroughly enjoying Chris Walsh’s new textbook on the 13 human vitamins. Especially the chapters on my 2 most favorite vitamins, biotin and ascorbate. Highly recommended for anyone who loves metabolism and biosynthesis - a masterpiece of scholarship!

    I tore my ACL playing tennis in Singapore over thksgiving & had ACL reconstruction surgery 2 wk later. Spent holiday recuperating w/support of family. So grateful for modern medicine & w/renewed appreciation for body & health. Such a privilege to walk, run, play sports!

    New study from Wade Harper using APEX proximity labeling to characterize the “mitochondria-autophagosome synapse” that forms upon mito depolarization, prior to mitophagy. Such comprehensive work, w/CRISPR-Cas9 screens also. ❤️ the schematics in Figs 4 & 6!

    Here’s a peek at the proteomic data. On the right are cell surface PN neuron proteins enriched in adult; left are enriched in pupae. Very cool to see known developmt proteins on left & synaptic transmission proteins on right. Grey dots most exciting - potential new discoveries!

    Proximity labeling in pupae & adult fly brain reveals changes in neuronal surface proteome over development. New synaptic wiring candidates IDed and 20 validated by fly KD. Great collab w/Liqun Luo & Carr lab. Congrats co-1st authors & Shuo Han!

    TEV protease is widely used bc of its exquisite seq-specificity. We used directed evolution to improve its catalytic efficiency, employing light caging of TEV’s recognition seq to provide a kinetic selection. "ultraTEV" improves speed of FLARE & SPARK.

    Prime editing: a fundamentally new method for genome editing from . Guided by single “pegRNA” w/ both guide and donor, a reverse transcriptase directly writes the edit into the genomic locus. No DSB & enables edits not prev possible. Stunning!

    New work from Peng Zou et al. on light-activated proximity labeling of RNA (“CAP-seq”). Catalyst is miniSOG, which catalyzes RNA photooxidation that can be captured with propargyl amine and Click chemistry. New OMM biology. Congrats Zou & Wang labs!
