pretty set on getting a scout rifle at this point, it is basically exactly what I want philosophically/aesthetically/functionally
protection for camping in boar country. maybe/likely actual hunting further in future

If you’re relying on this weapon for serious protection against real threats, I’d consider a semi-auto. I’d be suspicious of a bolt action if I could potentially be surprised by a hostile wild animal.

yea idk how unreasonable I'm being in trying to balance "it's aesthetically appealing and a bit lighter and I'll just get really good at it" against "but what if something bad happens"

We’re talking about very marginal situations here in the first place, certainly. If this is a one-time, long-term investment that will need to fulfill all your needs, that’s worth considering.

In boar country for defense I'd go with a hard-hitting handgun. You'll have it all the time; rifle is a pain. For other use, unless you already have a bunch of guns, it is very hard to not go AR-15/AR-10 for modularity.
