savage 110 vs ruger 6830 that is. both 10-round detachable box bolt action in .308 w/ irons rail and threaded barrel, around same weight/length

looks like Springfield also makes a Garand-action clone that's way shorter than it's forebear, if you want something in the same class w/o bolt action

all the springfield M1A line is really appealing to me but maybe someday down the road

too expensive for first gun, bit heavy for multi-day camp/hike, also I like the tactility/involvement of bolt, rapid cycling thing to get good at

if you really want something cheap w/ a bolt and nothing else, get a mosin. meme gun aside, they're dead simple, dirt cheap, and the one I use is capable of putting copper on target at a kilometer fairly easily. hell of a kick though. v heavy, not for a hiking pack.

the ruger scout is a lot lighter than the M77, but the savage would probably still be more comfortable. however, i like rugers more - they're easier to do maintenance on, they're a really customer-friendly company, etc.

whatever you go with, general rule of thumb i follow is to save up enough to get an optic that costs 100-150% price of the rifle.

i have 3 rugers - .22lr (M77), .30-06 (M77), and .22-250 (American Predator). the 30-cals in M77 line are HEAVY - not just in weight but in "feel".

the savage i got for my housemate in 30-cal is MUCH lighter, and feels more comfortable to shoot, but experiences more feeding issues.

if by "scout" you mean "light" .308 is too big, maybe .243 instead?

What you save on the rifle, you can spend on an optic.
