so group one assumed modern "imho" was a revival rather than a new word with a new etymology, group two never knew the old one, so neither group knew the other interpretation even existed

Did it die out? My feeling is that IMHO has been in continuous use. But it may have disappeared for decades and I didn’t even notice.

I never stopped using it, or noticed other people had, but then I spent a good decade with IRC as my main online presence.
