is that really a thing, I thought the whole idea was imho was a more emphatic version of imo

ok after very many replies it appears the story here is: "im(humble)o" was a 1990s-era usenet-ism that died out, "im(honest)o" is a 2010s descendant of "imo" and "tbh"

so group one assumed modern "imho" was a revival rather than a new word with a new etymology, group two never knew the old one, so neither group knew the other interpretation even existed

But IMNSHO doesn't make any sense with 'honest'.
-
I'd never seen imnsho until literally people started citing it in this thread

Not sure whether to be happy or not people don't read the Jargon file cover to cover.

?!?!?!?

how many people on the internet have been lying about their honesty instead of, as I assumed, their humility?

That was how I learned it ~20-25 years ago on USENET, but of course the "humble" is essentially always ironic.

It's humble. It's always been humble. Thinking that it stands for "honest" is as incorrect as using tabs, or **shudder** eMacs.

If memory serves, it was relatively common in online discussions mid-1990s.

I read a book in the mid 90s that was in essence the Jargon File on dead trees. It's entry was 'humble'.

This was the original meaning all over USENET, which I honestly do not know if it was before your time or not

The first I ever heard of the h in imho meaning honest was the xkcd strip a couple days ago. I'd always thought it meant humble. Mostly used to indicate uncertainty.

I’ve never heard of anything except humble. I’m old. Not only was I on Usenet in the early 90s, but also BBS systems such as BYTE magazine’s BIX.

I'd never heard it used otherwise until a couple of days ago.

that's amazing because it standing for "honest" was news to me
-
the regular use of "honestly, ..." in English conversation is bizarre, casually admitting all of the previous was couched in deception
-
i've seen that pointed out and I hate myself for using it (i adopted "tbh" as a habit at some point)
