hit on the idea a while back that people who got their culture from sites like 4chan, SA, LW are best thought of as diaspora communities

Isn't living in a filter bubble a very widespread human defect, no matter the culture? Same can be said for conservative religious people, programmers who insist Smalltalk is the best language ever, 9GAG-ers with their constant "forever alone" idiocies, and a bootload of others?

it's one operating in an open environment/mixed company, but their output marks them as belonging to a particular tribe

most people are more connected to their culture similars than geography similars. Historically, very few people could go beyond that though (rock stars, actors, sports people).
