I was reading about case systems because I was curious where they came from in the first place because the past like 1200 years of european linguistic history is them vanishing

it seems like an iron law that case systems go away when you're forced to interact daily with distant language branches/families

like old english loses its case system upon contact with the danes. all the old norse-descended languages lose theirs except icelandic. romance obviously from germanic contact etc

(basically the process sounds cyclical, you have all these cool adpositions you use to much they blend together with the words forming cases, then you get...

I have a crackpot theory that the PIE flamen/brahmin caste invented the PIE language as an IQ-signaling mechanism, and proliferated inflections to make the priestly language as difficult as possible.

It’s not really credible that any ordinary person ever actually spoke Sanskrit; there are vastly too many obscure verb forms. The brahmins invented it, and since it was the prestige dialect, a rounded-off version trickled down to hoi polloi.

this seems like one of those "of dubious truth but incredibly seductive/pattern-fitting" ideas like the bicameral mind thing

I am no expert on this subject so the only thing that Wikipedia article that really made sense to me was: "No person, including Quijada, is known to be able to speak Ithkuil fluently." Still found it fascinating though.

Pretty clearly invented for IQ-signaling purposes, though!

Well, not entirely. For example, Czech today is more highly inflected than Old Czech was.
