A huge number of the polymaths mentioned in this article lived before the advent of the modern workplace, or even the economy as we know it. So this extrapolation doesn't make a lot of sense.https://twitter.com/ID_AA_Carmack/status/986272716318687232 …

Furthermore, it's worded to imply that grinding a 60+ hour work week for decades is how you become a polymath. If that were true I'd know a lot more polymaths and a lot fewer bitter, depressed alcoholics--though I'm sure those sets intersect!

I do believe that working hard can make you into a polymath but grinding out a work week is only one (usually damaging) way to do it. There is joyful, self-directed learning, maybe bordering on obsession, that does not look anything like "work"

In fact that learning might look like an eclectic podcast diet, at least in part. In addition to reading books, Newton listened to many, many sermons and lectures (so that's your 17th century podcast right there).

TLDR: being a polymath has everything to do with learning and experimenting and making stuff being a primary source of joy and fulfillment in your life and basically nothing to do with "grinding"

(I have many problems with the conclusions in the linked article as well, but I was responding to the tweet I quoted which I think is harmful and will result in fewer polymaths in the world if its advice is taken seriously.)

I hate this shit because whenever SV people use the word polymath I get the impression the intent isn't "I want to indulge in my many varied interests"...
