The problem with the IQ discourse / recent-uptick-in-mainstream-discussion-of-HBD: People don't understand statistics intuitively. And I mean that in a very specific way: People *will* extrapolate from aggregate population differences to prejudice against individuals.

Look at the reaction to James Damore. He discussed aggregate group differences — higher variance in male IQ, different interest tendencies — and a huge outrage contingent jumped straight to "you think women are stupid and unqualified." Because probabilities aren't intuitive.

The flipped misconception happens also, it's just less visible because it thrives among outside-of-the-Overton-Window groups. For example, NYT publishes something sober and responsible like this https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/23/opinion/sunday/genetics-race.html … and it's taken as a justification of white ethno-nationalism

Anyway I'm not sure how to fix or mitigate this problem, because our brains fundamentally run on heuristics.https://twitter.com/sonyaellenmann/status/979803764612775936 …

I think Andrew Sullivan hit the nail on the head here, and I think globalized Asian identity politics will surprise American liberals and leftists. How are China and India going to react to IQ differentials among populations? Personally, I don't know http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2018/03/denying-genetics-isnt-shutting-down-racism-its-fueling-it.html …pic.twitter.com/RyxzK39taf

where the meaning of "equality" that people uphold as a terminal value shifted from *moral* equality, which is an idea that undergirds all enlightenment thinking

to meaning that people are actually all (or have the potential to be) exactly the same in proclivity, capability, etc

this is made explicit in westphalianism, though with states instead of people

that it is undeniable that some states are big and powerful and others are small and weak, but they have the same moral worth

and so every state's internal affairs are sacrosanct having nothing to do with their material capability to defend them
