going right is a minority strategy, people who can't compete against the best players for the best attention pool switch to playing for a smaller, less desirable one
-
attention sponges probably follow a power law dist, so there's some cutoff after which a mediocre to decent player in the main game can switch and be one of the best in a smaller game
-
this all (very roughly) balances out to where quality of top dogs in a space correlate with quality of the space
-
as a sidenote this is more or less the same reasoning I used to explain to a trp-ish friend why some men going full feminist (docile, emotion-harmonizing, etc) was a viable pussy strategy
-
largest/best pool of women want stereotypical "alpha" traits, smaller pool want feminine (not "beta" signifying "bad at alpha" but just "good at something different") traits
-
so reasonably competent can switch and get outsize reward from a different pool than they could trying to compete within the main pool
-
(this is all a completely different thing than like, actual leaders. I don't think the attention-maxxing media cycle darling is really all that valuable tbh)
-
Presumably the value of a media darling is in their disposable nature. If your infrastructure's in place, you can grab one, use it for advancing your position and let it absorb return fire with little risk to your infrastructure.
