Good, interesting thread. I think there are good ideas out there about how eg technology might help build something better that still upholds humanist ideals.

However, you may want to be careful using Democracy as shorthand for US system. There are other working implementations of Democracy. Parliamentary systems come to mind. They allow for more pol. parties, more compromises, less risk of autocrats, better rep. of minorities, etc

Not exactly perfect, nor immune to manipulation or suboptimal outcomes, of course, but when fixing the system let’s not throw out what we have that works before learning from it.

You can ponder that if you have at least a concept of an alternative. Until then, the only recourse is limiting authority which is pretty much what the framers and classical liberals came up with.

But yeah, it's troubling to see a particular form of government going from an instrument to something worth protecting for its own sake.

We really need to take a hard look at the mechanics of the system and nobody seems to be doing that because the Constitution is the holy writ of our civic religion or something.
