it's commonly accepted that non-programmers don't understand programmed systems so they ascribe agency and mystery to them but the truth is neither do most programmers

like "reading tea leaves" is now a stock phrase for random guessing. this would not be seen as we see "reading tea leaves" but as it was seen when it was done in earnest by people of great esteem
