Why is anyone against wireheading? Wireheading sounds great
-
-
but if they can just keep wireheading, I don't see the problem
-
fwiw this is a classic objection to utilitarianism, that with a simple definition of happiness as pleasure, a pig in a pleasure machine is more morally valuable than a dissatisfied socrates
-
One of those things I believe but recognize can never be turned into a "how we live our lives" principle so whatever
-
see I agree with the objection and think utilitarianism is stupid, this is the core disagreement rather than anything about hypothetical version of wireheading per se
-
personally I see the desire to inscribe one's self into the universe as core to what it is to be human
-
whether by reproduction, education, works, what have you. people who lack this drive may as well not exist
-
so to me the willingness to give up all possibility for external influence is deeply repugnant
-
this attitude is so interesting to me, I do not get it on an intuitive level

thus it serves as irreversible eradication of consciousness, combining disgust-feeling of being a suicide plus disgust-feeling of being in a vegetative state
-
not to mention violates norm-feelings like work ethic/duty toward society, being involved in intimate/familial relationships, pleasure machine feels deeply unfair if one is a justice-cuck, etc

@AmbrosialArts that’s my understanding too -
Lotus Eater Machines actually prefigure wireheading and both are not up to date with modern neuroscience. My understanding is it's theoretically possible to wire someone's brain up to be like that, so they die chasing dopamine, but it's possible to wire for low-addiction bliss.
-
It's a really old myth. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lotus-eaters …
-
The reason why people die on the dopamine wire is because dopamine both is at once pleasurable and provokes pleasure-seeking behaviors. But there are other chemicals involved with pleasure, and with the standard orgasm response, that dial this down, lest we jack off all day.
-
Obviously we are actually somewhat good at creating superstimuli which fuck up our ability to be content with what we have (hello Doritos, how I love you and loathe you), so it's a good cautionary tale, just don't build your world on top of it. Future worlds might conflict.
-
sidebar why are doritos so bland now they were better like 10 years ago
-
Wait really? I want to experience previous Doritos and now Doritos side by side
