nothing inherent in young distinguishing themselves from old says it has to go in the direction of informality

macaronis, fops, incroyables the most obvious/outrageous examples of a youth choosing extravagance

but the general trend from a subdued/utilitarian warrior upper class to a more idle/decadent courtly one is a common theme throughout history

thus I think the fact that the trend has been generally downward for a bit over two centuries has more to do with spirit of times
