That is a really good observation. It’s almost like the concept of holy sites has bled into the secular world. The cult of the commodified pilgrimage.

When I feel that dread, I read Medal of Honor citations from long ago — and then feel it more. IIRC for all posthumous MoH awards on Peleliu, the recipient died by diving on a grenade to safe adjacent comrades.

Population growth decline. Developing nations are developing. Higher incidence and/or acceptance of homosexuality. Better family planning as well as scientific advances in birth control. Less cultural pressure on women to reproduce.

Of all those things, the only one that really matter is the development of the nations. The main reason people were having a lot of kids was because the rate of survival was lower and because they needed helping hands. Everything else you said is comparatively irrelevant.

I wonder how busy the worlds 2nd, 3rd or 4th tallest mountains are? Probably much better experience! Like everyone making plans for New Years Eve. The crowds and build up takes away from the experience in many cases.

Well, it can go one way or the other. It can either be damn near impossible to climb, or someone could build a ski lift.
