I started making silly little twitter bots a few years ago and kind of built up from there
did that a few months, found a more experienced freelance webdev partner on craigslist, did that eight or nine months
then got my first "real" job a bit less than two years ago, saas backend now more systems stuff
had done a third of an english and a third of a math undergrad before dropping out, worked food/retail until freelance thing
