On a 17" 1080p monitor, in Google Chrome, zooming to 200% makes the text-size-to-column-width exactly right.

it looks gorgeous to me. unfortunately "to me" is browser in a vertical monitor. on horizontal it's too wide and phone too narrow

Still not great on phone (huge font size, margins too wide), but Chrome's "optimize for mobile viewing" fixed it.

Make viewport the width of the screen and put the sidebar above content on viewports <768px. Probably bump font size too
