When you join, say, Google, there is a guaranteed outcome. This is now outsize in many cases. In startups, it is the chance of a big payoff.

So now the calculation has shifted. Instead of an ok salary in a company, a low one in a startup, and massive upside, it's big vs. bigger.

The problem in the startup scene is that to attract great talent, the deal has to pencil out. Including for technical founders.
