Yonatan Zunger 🔥 added,
Speech restrictions have always existed in the US, and they have never been enforced in a content-neutral way.
Speech perceived as threatening to those in power – for example, calling for an end to racism in policing – is met with force.
Speech perceived as acceptable by those in power – from the "million woman march" to white supremacists – proceeds freely.
(The fact that those two seemingly different things were both considered innocuous enough to proceed is an interesting fact in itself)
This is not a new thing; a simple search for "civil rights protest fire hose" will show you the 1960's.pic.twitter.com/Uzf7vBuIig
Those were *not* viewed as "peaceful protests" any more than Ferguson was, even when people were literally just standing somewhere —
Because a protest to demand a significant change to the social order is inherently a call for upheaval.
Right-wing protests, by definition, are calls to *strengthen* existing systems, to give more power to those in power.
this is a matter of perception, hardly "by definition"
further from center one goes in any direction, the more popular the view that the powers that be have been captured by the opposing side
