So "the election was hacked!" turns out to mean "Russia bought some ads on Facebook."
in my mind for "the election" to "be hacked" it would mean someone changed vote totals thus resulting in the wrong winner

there is a sea of difference being elided here. "the DNC was hacked and the events surrounding that caused people to vote differently" is...

I think "the election was hacked" is a vague and not especially meaningful description of anything.

I think "Russia used cyber attacks, fraud, and disguised propaganda to influence the election" is better.

There's a lot we don't know still, too. We don't know what Russia did when intruding in state voter registrations.

Did they alter anything? Who did they give that data to? How was it used by them or others?

sure, but if it came out they literally "hacked the election" tomorrow, it wouldn't justify such a headline today
