I don't think "protest" and "pitched pseudo-battle" are particularly different things
that is basically what a protest is intended to be
eh, there are different modalities, it's an imprecise term
old liberal-style protests (civil rights, AIDS crisis) were about creating a spectacle for the medium of television to win public opinion
this was an effective strategy in its time because it attracted attention by shocking sensibilities
and it was definitely not a "battle" in that the goal of the protesting party was to have violence done to them to garner sympathy
