also there's tons of cheap RF ICs nowadays it'd be fun to make a phased-array radar to do terrain matching
real military radars use FPGAs nowadays too, and i'm sure someone smarter than me can use parts meant for 802.11 / LTE for the RF Tx/Rx bits

yeah being in space makes star tracking a lot easier because scattered light coming from the Sun doesn’t shit up everything
you have to deal with weather though when not in space. I guess that leaves inertial guidance.
