but I expect a lot of people would be very upset with this, and they don't really have the vision to pull it off anyway

It is rightfully decried as such. Less homeownership equals more inequality because people can't build up equity.

That being said, the blame still lies chiefly with governments. They make policies that make housing completely unaffordable.

Not saying that corporations are completely blameless (H-1B visa abuse, which further exacerbates housing costs).

Even then, governments actively enable that sort of behavior, especially in California.

The problem is those who already have money in real estate, & developers, always want to choke supply to raise their own value.

Investment by tech companies should be great, if they're solving a problem & the need to make profit from it is secondary.

But yeah, at this point, anything that increases supply of well-planned, low-cost housing, is good.

Columbus and Houston have cheap apartment complexes everywhere. No reason why SF suburbs couldn't, even if SF city will always be expensive.

NIMBYism, the cancer of the Bay Area. State govt needs to take over zoning and force cities to allow development.

Tech companies could build in South, North or East Bay, opening up commutes from lower cost communities. But mid peninsula is so cool.
