I first read the enchiridion of epictetus as a teenager and it is one of the books that has most shaped the way I think about the world
-
-
he was a stoic, very big on duty, remaining placid in the midst of circumstance, utter indifference to anything out of one's power
-
to him, one has power over one's feelings, and must keep them in check, and no power over things that happen to one and so must not care
-
-
but lately I have come to decide the better approach is to put as many things in one's control as possible
-
stoicism is dignified, but it is better to strive
-
stoicism isn't "don't strive" it's, "don't be emotionally invested outside of the act of striving"
-
striving is within your power, the result of it is not
-
there is a rather heavy emphasis on the idea that you ought to fulfill the role you are given rather than try to reach another
