70 years of pretending our protectorates and largely autonomous vassal states are "allies"

and the system now being dismantled by taking such rhetoric at face value and (rightly) concluding if we're just first among equals these "allies" aren't pulling their own weight lol

It's true they don't pull their own weight, but they pull some, and I worry we'll miss that help when it's gone,
@alicemazzy. Our role is affordable because others volunteer to help.2 replies 1 retweet 5 likes -

Not only they don't pull their own weights, they saddle US with "obligation debt" - i.e. instead of Germany+Poland offseting Russia on land (which they can if they want), US has to both send ground forces to Europe *and* take care of the "rest of the world".

Your article is nice in theory. In practice, the entire alliance system can (and probably should) have some serious readjustments. Saying "we have allies" like it's 1989, while ignoring their strategic decisions since is ignoring some crucial facts.

A more dynamic foreign policy of "honest friendship with all nations—entangling alliances with none" might be a better option.

"entangling alliances" is WWI thinking, meaningless today. concert of europe was a time where many nations could field substantial armies and peace was maintained by gentleman's agreements

and we didn't have alliances in 1989 either. we had countries we were willing to defend ownership of with force (this was the basis of NATO, dual to warsaw pact)

rn the only international diplomacy of import is a) dealing with russia and china, or b) wooing/intimidating countries that may flip from our sphere to one of theirs or vice-versa
