Watching a documentary on FGM & I cannot even cope. I’m not squeamish but this is too much. It aids no one, why did this ever become a tradition? And why did whoever thought to try it not get their genitals cut off so they realise & never do it again?!

Same can be said of any tradition, including male circumcision. In the cultural milieu where it's practiced it's seen as a harmless and regular thing.

Ahh yes! I never understood male circumcision either, how can you do that to a child?! Some traditions are fun, like birthday cake! Traditions of mutilation are not ok though, ever...
