Ok wanted to amend a previous tweet about Netflix's Sabrina: the character initially portrayed as an androgynous girl is in fact non-binary AND the actor is non-binary, too! (there's still depictions of transphobia fyi)

I'm genuinely curious (haven't watched Sabrina yet).... is your issue with the transphobic parts that they're held up as "good" or "normal" (or not concretely addressed as "bad") or that they exist at all?
-
well it would be super cool if a trans or non-binary character could exist without their main storyline revolving around them being bullied over it
-
I agree! I'm not sure I should be a *requirement* though. There's something to be said for a storyline showing a little of what trans/non-binary people go through IRL (especially if it's a "bad guy" doing it. I think that's the case here?) We should have both!
-
Sure, but I can't think of any media off the top of my head that doesn't focus on the negative. As an aside, I call out the transphobia in media so people know what they're getting into when watching. Plenty of people already live that abuse.
-
Fair enough, that's definitely a worthy goal in and of itself.

if you feel like it, would you mind elaborating on the transphobic parts? I can't watch it atm but I am curious...
-
sure! non-binary character is bullied by football players for being androgynous and tormented by a demon as well. specifically, the demon calls them "boy-girl" and an "abomination." character's friends are very supportive though

It definitely improves over the season and the character develops into a strong, inspiring character. The transphobic quips are still sprinkled around and never properly addressed, but the character ends up being one non-binary and everyone else can look up to.
