My Twitter break was extremely good for my mental and physical health, mostly because I wasn't staring at a constant stream of pain all day. So, something has to change. (Cont'd)

One of they key benefits of Twitter to me is exposure to marginalized voices I don't come across any other way. For every mainstream article playing "both sides," my Twitter feed educates me on the real history and story underneath.

I *love* this and I don't want to shy away from it. But I want to consume it on my schedule, not Twitter's.

So, I'm looking for news sites/sources curated by marginalized people. I want these stories, but at the time of my choosing.

If I could get my Twitter news in digest form, I would. Every day at 5pm is "horror hour" and I get all my news and rage at the time of my choosing etc etc

But I don't know of anything like that. And I don't want to exchange my Twitter feed for a mainstream news subscription. Too much is erased.

Does anyone have any suggestions here? A source of news that will expose me to stories on Indigenous history or the prison strikes or Black women being so woefully underserved by our medical system. Something I can consume on my schedule and not in a feed format.

I hate to say it but what about a well curated Reddit? I get a lot of indigenous news from r/indiancountry and I feel like you can section yourself off from shitty communities

Seems like it should be straightforward enough to script something out. Have the program wake up at a certain time each day, pull your feed via Twitter’s API, then send it to you via email or something.

that means I still have it in my feed, though. I want my twitter feed to be Not That.

Pretty sure you could use that in combination with lists to have a general Twitter experience which is less taxing, then your “horror hour” digest. I may have to look into it. I’m thinking vaguely like Instapaper’s Kindle output.

@feedbin makes following a twitter account just like subscribing to RSS feed. One of the reasons it’s worth my money. 👍

I use Twitter for the same reasons and have similar struggles. I turn off notifications and check it on my own schedule. I've used AntiSocial (Android app) to block apps at certain times of day to break the habit of reflexively checking. Not ideal, but manageable on my terms.

I had similar problems, which I dealt with by crafting a very comprehensive muted word list not checking twitter as the first/last thing in my day. This sounds like a better solution if it exists. Please share if you find something.

The closest I have (and it's admittedly not great) is using lists and Tweet Deck so I can keep the columns I don't want to see off the screen until I look for them
