My Twitter break was extremely good for my mental and physical health, mostly because I wasn't staring at a constant stream of pain all day. So, something has to change. (Cont'd)

One of they key benefits of Twitter to me is exposure to marginalized voices I don't come across any other way. For every mainstream article playing "both sides," my Twitter feed educates me on the real history and story underneath.

I *love* this and I don't want to shy away from it. But I want to consume it on my schedule, not Twitter's.

So, I'm looking for news sites/sources curated by marginalized people. I want these stories, but at the time of my choosing.

If I could get my Twitter news in digest form, I would. Every day at 5pm is "horror hour" and I get all my news and rage at the time of my choosing etc etc

But I don't know of anything like that. And I don't want to exchange my Twitter feed for a mainstream news subscription. Too much is erased.

Does anyone have any suggestions here? A source of news that will expose me to stories on Indigenous history or the prison strikes or Black women being so woefully underserved by our medical system. Something I can consume on my schedule and not in a feed format.

Because my Twitter newsfeed is literally making me sick

I don't know if this is a good solution, but I mute a *lot* of words associated with politics, and keep muting as new ones pop up. It isn't perfect but it has helped my mental health and I haven't missed news events - just blessedly missed commentary.

In a thread about Twitter being overwhelming/bad, seeing 2 people I personally know (but in different contexts), respect, & value is a tiny bit of interconnected goodness of bringing the world together, online. I agree with both of you... but also 👋!

I find Nuzzel is a useful way of getting a digest of what folks I follow are linking to and discussing but it doesn't cover twitter conversations - just conversations off twitter that twitter folks are talking about.

i feel the same right now (about the stream of pain) -- so I think a break is a good idea, maybe periodically. Also blocking with the Block Site plugin on my 'work' browser, for a while

Really liking the new Google News. It curates topics from different sources together and allows you to add your own trusted sources. And it shows you topics you might be interested in. It might not fit the requirements you're looking for, but it definitely helps me digest news.
