This really resonates with me ‘I’ll just be telling him things and it feels like I’m going on and in and on, and he’s like ‘Mmhmm?’’ Everything in this engaging video matches my experience of aphantasia and no inner monologue, apart from her not being very into reading fiction.

I'm curious to hear from designers of any sort that have aphantasia.

I have aphantasia and no inner monologue and I am a big reader. I read for the plot, the characters, for learning about ideas and other worlds. When I read I see the words but take in the concepts. There is no voice reading to me, and no images.

This is a clear interesting introduction to aphantasia - tells you lots of basics but is still engaging to an old hand who has read lots of ‘discovering aphantasia’ posts!

I knew when was asking that there was someone with aphantasia who is a composer. Have just realised (from reading twitter of 3 days ago) that it’s you.

Anatomically modern humans existed 100k years before spoken language. I want to see research on these cool differences in us related to the invention of language. Or how language effects monologue & aphantasia. Fascinating!

I have a file on my computer titled Librarianship and aphantasia and a whole page of introduction and plan on it. A lot of work to go before it turns into anything comprehensive, but it is progress!

Sometimes stock selection feels really powerful. I’ve identified a book (that would’ve been great for a student’s final year project a couple of years ago & will be great for other students in future) & ordered it. It will be in the library to expand knowledge in the coming years

There are times now where I’ll be aware of having been thinking about something - a memory or a concept... and I’ll wonder if people who always think in an inner voice can really have put all that thought, layer upon later, into a sentence.

I always so love the contrast of coloured tights with this kind of shoes - it makes a happy start to my day.

I’ve not tried to get the experience of imagery or visualisation (other than briefly dangerously staring at a light!), partly cos I haven’t wanted to visualise. The thought of a sensory deprivation tank is NOT appealing to me! Any aphantasia ppl tried it, or something else?

‘Although I like when a world is atmospheric, I can't visualize the details. So, when an author spends a full page detailing what a room or a dress looks like in flowery language, it adds nothing to the story.’ I only like descriptions with direct relevance to plot.

A great succinct post about aphantasia and reading. ‘For me, "picturing" a setting is more of a feeling rather than actually seeing it.’ For me too!

When needing to get my children out of the house yesterday, I decided that if I want one of their top things to do to be sitting around in bookshops reading & drinking coffee, we need to do it more. Great afternoon! Could get pricey, but I used a book token for mine at least.

Pile of books on bookshop table: The Other Bennet Sister, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Third Wheel and Witch in Winter.

Interestingly, the scientist who coined the term aphantasia (Adam Zeman) has speculated that have an easier time being and living in the present moment as they are not distracted by visual imagery. Some food for further contemplation.

This is so bizarre, reading about someone who’s obsessed with lack of inner monologue (as I am), but obsession through being amazed that people function without an inner monologue, as opposed to me being happy without one, & amazed that it’s a thing other people see as essential

Not that that’s the topic of the article, so perhaps I’m going too far here!

With (lack of) auditory imagery being an aspect of aphantasia for lots of people (tho not all of course), this line suggests a link between aphantasia & lack of inner speech: ‘Investigation of inner speech is part of investigation of auditory imagery in general’
