As much as I love volumetric interfaces and the conversations around that, I still think that a lot of 2D interfaces will be necessary as VR/AR evolves - especially for text. I think this is a really good example of how 2D interfaces exist and assist in the physical world!https://twitter.com/Serayph/status/1119476229164261376 …

People LOVE redundancy ya'll. We can talk about recognition over recall all day every day, but I want an exit sign AND a door handle.

What are we looking at here? Is it an AR session?

I have no idea, but it looks like it. Even if it's not and it's just an overplayed mo-cap - it's got me thinking all types of ways.

All thisn started making a lot more sense to me when I started imagining 2D and 1D as forms of greater greater abstraction—which can be both useful and powerful—as opposed to forms of reduction that left something to be desired.

Absolutely! I like to think of it as a home versus a home icon. Your home is a 3D place that evokes powerful thoughts and emotions to you, but a 2D icon of a home is relational to both your personal experience, but also everyone else's personal experience to their homes.

Agree but not that. Important thing with UI is the sense of a separate layer over a world, so the user instinctively knows what is UI and what is world. Blending the two leads to lack of confidence, ironically killing the will to discover because users hate feeling foolish.

I would argue against that for multiple reasons. Magic Leaps own OS exists on a platform that's "2.5D" and it looks pretty amazing. Create has both 2D iconography and a 3D color picker UI. I wouldn't shy away from blending the two just yet, users do understand the difference.

That a bad example as every single part of those signs could have been done with just a static canvas. What is the point in adding unnecessary movement just to make something busier with no actual benefit. The brain does a good job of overlaying static images, we should keep them
