The death of #JamalKhashoggi should end American "dreams of a reforming Arab strongman" @jacksondiehlhttps://wapo.st/2qhDbeU?tid=ss_tw&utm_term=.6fd9ff1fdbff …

Easy to "pontificate without consequences" about the Middle East? Actually the path of least resistance in DC is to defend the perquisites of the rich & powerful, while downplaying the importance of those starved, unjustly imprisoned, or murdered by them.
-
Answer the question I posed in the thread Michele please. Don't shift the discussion.
-
It is not up to US leaders to decide which pol system other countries have. But they do get to decide which foreign leaders they support & rely on, and here I agree w/Jackson that the "reforming strong man" is a mirage.
-
Fine but if the strongman is a mirage what do you suggest? You have to have a practical answer to that question. Easy to reject something but if no better alternative exists then that is idealism not realism.

And that assumes that you could even transition into democracy without violence. Look at examples in the region. Iraq even with an American occupation and hundreds of thousands of casualties still struggles without law and order and basic services despite its massive oil wealth
-
Building a successful governance model in the Arab world has been a huge challenge. At least the traditional monarchies have delivered stability, basic services and a larger share of oil income than any other model of government and over a 50 year period with all their faults.
-
Have human rights been sometimes trampled on, absolutely, but all others whether "republican" or theocratic (like Iran) have abused their people a thousand times more. You are much luckier being a Saudi than a Libyan, Iranian, Iraqi, Algerian or even a Venezuelan. All oil rich.
-
Instead of pontificating idealistic nonsense come up with practical suggestions + open yourself up to debate where your assumptions + theories can be tested + questioned. Easy to write on your own platforms with no pushback that will expose the shallowness of such arguments.

Elections can be good. But how about not imprisoning and executing religious and political dissidents as a start?
-
You mean we shouldn’t do what you do?! Ok, we can do that!https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2012/10/how-team-obama-justifies-the-killing-of-a-16-year-old-american/264028/ …
-
Unlike the Obam admin, the Saudi government didn’t “justify” what happened to Khashoggi, on the contrary its prosecuting 18 suspects, and reshuffling its intelligence agencies! Have there been any charges against the killers of this boy?!

He will do it w/without help from anyone except Saudi people!!

True, but then MBS has just invited the world to an investment conference in KSA and there are signs in Makkah for all of mankind, it reads somewhere in the Quran. Nationalism doesn’t help here, KSA needs to talk to the world.
-
We are talking. We said all the truth about khashoggi death will be revealed and all those involved will brought to justice regardless who are they. The problem , there are people and states who just want to go after our beloved MBS even before the justice takes its course!!

Lol. Salfism/Wahhabism is a product of Saudi Monarchy & they export & fund it. Ibn Wahhab literally made a deal with Ibn Saud to to creat Saudi Arabia. Wahhabis hate MB/islamists. You’re literally defaming Al-Sauds. We are having wahhabi problem from Saudi educated Wahhabis.
