ICYMI: @sh_grewal and I on the dark side of consensus in #Tunisia: "Normally, we might see the potential end of a power-sharing agreement as something to lament. But it may be good news for Tunisian democracy"https://foreignpolicy.com/2018/10/12/tunisia-just-lost-its-anchor-of-stability-thats-a-good-thing/ …

The argument @sh_grewal & I make here relates to something which has broader relevance for foreign policy debates in Washington: "Stability" should not be treated as the ultimate objective of US policy in the Middle East. Rather, stability is better seen as a means to other ends

In practice, and not merely in theory, prioritizing stability in the Middle East has failed even *on its own terms,* instead producing both instability and the perpetual, nagging threat of more instability in the future

When defenders of the Saudi regime say that we shouldn't take the murder of Jamal Khashoggi too seriously because, well, "stability," then you know that their starting premise is the precisely one that is most likely to further destabilize the region

But, perhaps more importantly, if "stability" isn't the goal of US policy in the first place, then we can question the entire narrative that every Arab dictator falls back on around *stability at all costs*—the same narrative that we keep falling for

If stability in the MENA region is so immaterial to you maybe you can choose to relocate to Syria, Libya, Yemen or even Iraq instead of pontificating from the comfort of the US. MENA history has failed to provide both freedom and stability so choice is clear. Go try their freedom

I didn't say it was "immaterial" (did you read the thread?); I said it was better viewed as a means rather than end unto itself

Funny how all these countries you named #SaudiArabia had a hand in financing and pushing the extremist to power. Funny how you keep defending the corrupt, war criminal and murderer #MBS at any cost. Even if you sound stupid and sick

He doesn't. There are 12 million immigrants from all around the world come to live in Saudi in fact there are more westerns living in Saudi than Saudis living in the west.
