I can't believe it's 2019 and I still read the words "Linux desktop." Or maybe I can. But it was a sad, tired topic even 20 years ago. There is blame here. There was simply no reason for a Linux desktop

Agreed. There was a serious push for Linux on the desktop at one time. The mainstream adoption didn’t happen but it wasn’t for lack of trying by LF, IBM, Red Hat, SUSE, and others.
