Hypothesis Non particularized interest as the gateway to reliable 1st jhana. Sense pacification piti as inherently interesting sensations produced by base level, contentless, sensory mind adjusting thresholds for provoking interest downward towards non conceptual awareness.

Totally agree. This outlines my experience with the inward(downward) travel towards the further jhanas. It always starts with auditory interest then a retraction from outside phenomena and towards bodily signals. Then those fade as awareness sharpens to singular stimuli.

another hypothesis earlier jhanas reflect activation of Lateral hypothalamic corridor (1st) and septal area (2nd), but there also must be inhibition sensory input (looking for where that is, maybe thalamic inhibitory neuron covering also associated with attention)

I don't have clear experiences with 3/4+ for 5+, I think it's going down towards the brainstem, near the pons/vta, forget the exact areas (an area associated with loss of consciousness when lesioned)

My thought is that each Jhana is associated with a further increase in brain activity in more areas simultaneously as well as a narrowing of the "focus" of "attention/awareness." My explorations are the nebulous systems of thought, like atten/awareness. They have to have a shape

All the increased brain power, more than base existence, at the same time focused on a 'smaller' point. Like increasing a hose and narrowing the opening at the same time. Fascinating. I want to manipulate and imprint that feeling.

@algekalipso talks about each of the jhanas in great nerdy neurobio detail towards the end of part 1 of this series of 3 podcasts with@thegoodtimeline I just finished listening today -- it's a lovely exploration!https://cosmictortoise.podbean.com/e/gtp-41-andres-gomez-emilsson-ii-state-of-the-qualia-part-1-of-3/ …1 reply 2 retweets 6 likes -

Are y'all familiar with
@meditationstuff and his work? While I haven't followed his meditation protocols in particular, I've enjoyed talking with folks in that general orbit about approaching this stuff in a kind of... open source self-hacker style?2 replies 0 retweets 3 likes
Yes, I've read a bunch of his blogposts. Also have had several in-person conversations, but not in a while. It's interesting to read about "brahma experiences" from such a secular point of view. Also great observations about the illusory nature of "energy flows".
