North Valley Rail is a planned train line that would go from Chico to Sacramento, where it would connect with the planned extension for trips down to Stockton and San Jose. Details in link and thread! 🚃

This is part a factor of it taking longer to react and brake at high speeds, and also because the force of impact increases exponentially. At 20 mph, most people will survive getting hit by a car. At 40mph, the impact is 4 times harder and very few do.

The US city with the highest car crash fatality rate - by a wide margin - happens to be the one where car racing is the major industry. Speed kills, especially when drivers crash into pedestrians.

#2: We have done a *really* good job at hiding how bad traffic violence is in a lot of cities by focusing on car-centric metrics like deaths per vehicle mile traveled. This is the breakdown per capita for cities over 50k pop., and IMO, it is pretty stunning.

There are about 8000 7-11s in the USA, and in 15 years, 6,000+ drivers have crashed into one. Sounds like we need more 😬

My takeaway from this article: about 78% of 7-11 stores have seen a driver crash into them in the last 15 years. chicago.suntimes.com/2023/2/8/23591

let's talk about onboard digital way-finding systems for transit. you know, the screen above you on a train which shows the next stop and some other stuff. i wanted to mock one up to see if I could squeeze in all my favorite features from systems around the world (small thread)
The image depicts two UI mockups of a wide-screen digital way-finding system that one might see onboard a train. Both views show the same view with slight modifications but the same base design: a strip/line map-style display with station circles atop a horizontal line stretching across the whole screen. The UI has a pure black background with UI elements highlighted in gray and accented in red (the color of the current line) with white bold sans-serif text. The station indicators are gray circles with a red border, with text instead showing the line letter ("R") and a station number, e.g. "R12". Below each circle is an estimated travel time, e.g. “4 minutes,” and above it is the station name in 45-degree tilted text.

The full visual description text is too long for Twitter alt descriptions, but go to https://tylerlafayette.com/alt-text.html for a plaintext HTML file containing the full text.

We condemn the GOP-led efforts to pass laws criminalizing drag shows — laws designed to stigmatize and target trans and gender nonconforming people everywhere. These laws not only lead to anti-LGBTQ rhetoric, but directly inspire hate and violence.

The last thing my trans student emailed me before they died by suicide was an op-ed they wrote to their local newspaper arguing for trans inclusion in highschool sports. They mentioned how cruel the comments from community members were. These annual "debates" hurt trans people.

Making the community safer up front, reducing the need for enforcement and settlements with injured people and survivors of those lost, is clearly better. It only makes sense to make sure this work can be done quickly. Sign on!
