last week's was as expected - the best yearly #XR hackathon with global participants - congrats to all the teams and we know not all had a chance to be the first to use the #VIVEXRElite but there's always more opportunities! #VR

Unlike most people on Twitter, I’m actually using GPT3 in a production system. The mistake people are making is they are asking “how can I use this to automate a smart person’s job”, when they should be asking “what would I do if I had unlimited dumb people”

If you last checked in on AI image makers a month ago & thought “that is a fun toy, but is far from useful…” Well, in just the last week or so two of the major AI systems updated.
You can now generate a solid image in one try. For example, “otter on a plane using wifi” 1st try:

There's one more change in 2020.3.40 that I forgot to call out! "Editor: Reduced the time taken to open inspectors by avoiding a pointless copy of a big thing behind the scenes." It improves editor 'snappiness' when selecting GameObjects/prefabs. Before/after:

For editor internals have a look at Unity's CSReference and which assemblies have InternalsVisibleTo (e.g. TestRunner). Then reference them in an asmref and put your code inside to open an API for example. See this package for a small example: twitter.com/marcel_wiessle

“Why does the performance of your build matter?”
Besides making life more efficient for devs and increasing how fast you can deploy a change or fix, a faster build can prevent more bugs! The more you can reasonably run in a PR build for example, the more you can catch there.

Someone needs to create a Plain Language > Corporate Speak translation guide. Something like-
Plain Language: That's a bad idea
Corporate: I'm having trouble understanding the value-add of this proposal
What are your plain-language-to-corporate translations?

Been working with a few people on the build system, so far PR build times are down from ~45 minutes to ~20 minutes across the past week and we’re going to improve that a lot further. Dev inner loop time is important - it enables everything else you do to happen faster and better.

The software engineering industry is so obsessed with measuring developer productivity... yet we're barely paying attention to measuring the impact of slack time / "not under pressure to ship" time on innovation, business impact, and retention.

This is the real battle for the metaverse: not the commercial rivalries between companies like Unity, Roblox, and Epic, who will all contribute to and benefit from open metaverse efforts, but the battle against the digital monopolies which seek to dominate, tax, and exclude. twitter.com/andybiar/statu
