Intelligence is adaption to unknown unknowns across an unknown range of tasks and domains. Automation is, at best, robustly handling known unknowns over known tasks (which is already incredibly difficult and resource-intensive in the real world -- whether engineering or data)

Our field isn't quite "artificial intelligence" -- it's "cognitive automation": the encoding and operationalization of human-generated abstractions / behaviors / skills. The "intelligence" label is a category error

I believe the goal of a research field should be to stop being primarily a research field, and instead move into the real world. Become an industry. Deep learning has achieved just that: academic research now represents less than 10-15% of users of deep learning.

A while ago, I thought doing things in a clever way was cool. Now, I understand that simple is better than clever. Clever is mostly showing off.

Creativity starts with individual motivations but require social confirmation: when a person has a new idea or sees a new pattern, and this novelty is selected by the appropriate field for inclusion in the relevant domain. M. Csikszentmihalyi

You can definitely do great work without having to sacrifice other aspects of your life -- in fact, in many cases, having a fulfilling life outside of work is a requirement in order to do great work

Yes music has structure that could be called algorithmic but AI will struggle to form 'culture' which for me is the main ingredient in music.

Evaluating music generation models by listening to them "transform" one measure of music into another does not make much sense to me, but it seems to be widespread in work on models using latent representations. Why?

Whenever I see this kind of headline, I always think "But what if intelligence is mostly about curve-fitting, and we're merely too un-self-aware to notice?"
