* You don’t need a personal logo * You don’t need fancy animations or fancy fonts and colors or layouts * Don’t start your portfolio without thinking about the content * Some people prefer writing down their content in a text editor, to fully focus on writing. Try it.

* Don’t start designing your portfolio and fall into the trap of polishing details of the site that don’t matter at first * Focus on the projects you loved the most working on, even if it’s just two. * If you don’t have many projects to show that’s totally fine!

* Don’t sell yourself & your work short. University projects are valuable as much as client work or sideprojects if you want to present them and are proud, just do it * Write about your work process in detail, what you loved and learned about it, what you would do differently now

* Don’t compare yourself to others who might be in a totally different stage of their career. Focus on yourself and what you want to achieve * Keep your website simple & accessible in terms of font sizes, colors & don’t play w/ the native browser scrolling behavior. It’s fine.

* Using WordPress or similar is totally fine * Bare in mind some visitors only skim your site. Make it easy to scan your work. Break text in multiple paragraphs, add headings & explainer images, even rough sketches * Document & collect all your work over the years carefully

So useful! I think the most important thing to take away with portfolios is that you are direct marketing yourself and your work to another human being. What is the problem you are solving for them? What do you know about them? And then focus on making that answer ultra clear.

Thanks for this, it was totally on point
Many of us that think too much or overcomplicate how polished things should be, so it's nice to hear that it doesn't matter as much as we think it does.
It's good, however, for a portfolio to stand out I guess

In the end, yes, it can stand out. But more with the projects and content that you present. You can be creative and put in your personality but this should come in the very end I think or at least shouldn’t be the focus when you start.

Thanks for writing it down and pinning it. It's a great reminder everytime I'm tempted to do all of those things which aren't a necessity as you mentioned.

Glad you find it useful!
