In seperate incidents at GG/Hyde & the 1100 block of Market, 86+ grams of fentanyl has been seized over the last 2 days. Both dealers(1 w/knife) already had 3 open cases each in which 6 felony arrest warrants were outstanding. Foot chases in both ended w/their arrest & bookings.pic.twitter.com/IUyRMxoJlx

@chesaboudin as someone who is deeply invested in communities of color and combating systematic racial inequality, I can’t imagine how not imprisoning these dealers is benefiting our community. A grain of fentanyl is enough to kill an adult. Please stop the death on our streets.

The war on drugs was an abject failure. Imprisoning a bunch of mostly PoC, poor, and desperate people selling drugs on the streets does nothing to address the root causes of substance use disorders and just further exacerbates racial and economic disparities in the cj system

Everybody agrees that the war on drugs was bad. I personally believe that dealers, not users should be prosecuted and put in prison after repeat offenses. But we simply can’t keep allowing dealers to sell drugs on the street without any consequences.

So instead of offering them housing, education, a job that pays a living wage, healthcare, etc. we should spend $100k a year incarcerating them just so they get released a couple years later with the exact same challenges they had before?

The American justice system relies on a system of punishment in correctional institutions. I do believe that we have so much progress to make on rehabilitating prisoners and ex-convicts, but drug dealers who cause death and addiction need to face harsh punishment.

Otherwise, as we have learned from the last year of DA Boudin in office, the behavior will simply not stop as there is no deterrent or consequence (like jail time).

Nearly every jurisdiction in the country has harshly punished drug dealers for decades. It doesn't work. It's never worked because it doesn't address the root causes of drug dealing which boils down to lack of opportunity.

If you truly care about racial inequities I strongly encourage you to disavow ineffective punishments that only serve to increase racial and economic disparities and read into the solutions antiracist activists, scholars, and researchers have advocated for for decades.

I think it’s important that there is a gradual transition from our current punishment-based model (or lack of under Boudin) to a model that directly addresses systematic inequality. I feel like doing away with punishment immediately is not the right answer, as there is no...

deterrent. But overall, I agree with you. We just need to consider a system in which stops the drug dealing instead of allowing it to happen. Rehabilitation courses and classes in prison would be a really good start (Scandinavia has been doing it for along time) to acclimate...
