So this contradicts the bullshit @chesaboudin was peddling. Unless in his eyes this is not considered a 'crime'.https://twitter.com/hknightsf/status/1247271100037214208 …

The SFPD's own data shows that crime is down 40% compared to last year during the same time period (3/8 - 4/5). A significant decrease in crime doesn't mean no crime.pic.twitter.com/6U74fi9pOD

That's reported crime; it's well known that SFPD doesn't even prosecute or look at property crime. There's no reliable data for that.

Chesa was peddling the BS that they're down because cops are arresting fewer people. They're down because fewer people are outside (different than the conclusion Chesa drew)

My read was that Chesa was advocating for rapid decarceration in the face of COVID-19 -- a policy many jurisdictions, even ones with SIP, are refusing to employ out of fear of a spike in crime. Those crime stats are strong evidence that that fear is unfounded.

Chesa cannot promise that decarceration will lead to increase in crime after returning to normalcy. It's extreme opportunism for sake of personal gain (to get his murdering father out of prison). Many people are incarcerated for heinous crimes.

I can't know Chesa's motivations. What I do know, is that I absolutely support health care professionals leading the response to a public health crisis. If they say public health is contingent on decarceration, then we must decarcerate.

I would love sources saying that this is the pressing need for society and especially the DA. The reality is that small businesses are suffering and the DA should focus on protecting them from losses from theft.

There are a ton of sources, but a couple great local ones include the director of jail health services: https://www.sfexaminer.com/news/to-control-virus-doctor-overseeing-sf-jails-seeks-rapid-reduction-of-inmate-population/ … and the Director of Criminal Justice and Health at UCSF: https://www.healthaffairs.org/do/10.1377/hblog20200324.784502/full/ … The reality is that people will die without these efforts.

Those seem affiliated with the DA. I didn't know that UCSF had a criminal justice department.
