My husband is reading The Lord of the Rings to the boys at bedtime, and he reads with *verve*. So sometimes I'm relaxing, winding down for the day, and suddenly the entire neighborhood can hear RIDE NOW! RIDE! RIDE TO RUIN AND THE WORLD'S ENDING! DEATH! DEATH!! FORTH EORLINGAS!

Imagine history of science class tracing geometry’s development from calculations heuristics of Egyptian artisans through transmission and refinement in Hellenic proofs and back to Egypt via Macedonian colonialism to receive perfected pure (Euclid) and applied (Ptolemy) forms...

Two points about the philosophy of consciousness: 1. No one has ever shown that philosophical zombies are possible. 2. No one has ever shown that Mary would say anything other than “Yup” when she first saw color. Let these horrible thought experiments die and move on!

Can there be in-between cases of phenomenal consciousness or is consciousness always either determinately present or determinately absent? With reference to Peter Carruthers's new book and a bad argument by George Berkeley.

This guy has 728 books out at one time! This makes my 161 books currently checked out seem like a mere handful! (I will be bookmarking this article to show anyone who thinks I have too many books.)

More evidence from our team that psychedelics induce enduring feelings of connection with nature in a causal way. Implications for improving environmentally conscious behaviours and policies?

1/12 A thread on whether perception is discrete, an idea Varela, Rosch & I discussed in The Embodied Mind (72-79) and I covered in Waking, Dreaming, Being (40-45). I blogged about this at a while ago

A spot-on review. I couldn't agree more. I'd only add I was shocked to see no reference to Alexandre Koyré or Edmund Husserl, who already made the book's point about Galileo and the mind Siri Hustvedt on Panpsychism’s Shifting Foundations via

When we speak of cognition, we put too much emphasis on what is inside the individual mind—symbolic representations and systems of abstractions—and pay too little attention to what happens on the “outside” –

What are the greatest stories or biographical facts in philosophy? Things I have in mind are like the trial and sentencing of Socrates, or out of spite Schopenhauer would schedule his lectures at the same time as Hegel but no one would show up.

Listening to Paul Stamets on JRE this morning talk about the Stamets Protocol and its effects not just on neurogenesis but also on long-term changes in visual and auditory acuity. I wonder, who is doing this research in connection w/ perceptual learning?
