    should focus on artistic excellence rather than promote the inflated price of Haribo Gold-Bears. All Academies can design rules as they see fit. I just hope that AMPAS and the Emmys don't define themselves by insisting that the medium is the message.

    No. is not listening. He is just carrying the water for theater owners. The point is to celebrate cinematic artistry, not to pretend that cinematic artistry is only available at the cineplex. I love seeing films in theaters. But I think the Emmys and AMPAS...

    Well, Alex expresses an opinion that a lot of people feel. That preserving the theatrical qualification for Oscar is no longer a valid ambition. I believe this attitude is coming from lobsters in a pot and not noticing as the water comes to a boil.

    ...a perfectly color-timed home screen (almost the same size) is "TV." AMPAS stands for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, not the Academy of Theater Owners. So...why not reward artistry rather than bad popcorn? Categories are set by AMPAS. They are not objective.

    All awards standards are subjective. They are called rules. There didn't used to be a DH in the MLB American League. Now there is. There's nothing objective about saying a film on a shitty multiplex (video) screen is "theatrical" while a film on...

    For only one reason. That is what Oscar was created for and that is AMPAS’s only distinction. Why not have a Tony award for Best Doc? The answer seems obvious. Perhaps Oscar’s day is over. That’s ok. What is the point of having anything but Emmy? Money. And ego. Period.

    Disagree. There are lots of awards from different groups. Win some. Lose some. Why should Oscars be chained to the leg of cinema chains? Why should emmys care if a film’s in a theater? (some screens are barely bigger than some tvs). It’s the excellence of film that should matter.

    It shouldn’t matter in terms of the value of the doc. But it is why Oscar should be for theatrical films and Emmy should be for televised films. The desire to have it both ways, including by AMPAS, is the only reason it is a problem.
