Compressed everything I learned about how life sciences work in the last year (and 100+ interviews) into 6000 words:https://guzey.com/how-life-sciences-actually-work/ …

just got a fascinating email in response to my essay: "It is very easy to get funding for students and post-docs, but virtually impossible to get funding for a full-time technician or researcher that can oversee or assist or manage research for multiple projects."pic.twitter.com/ccbQfYh7ud

the post took a quote from @cshalizi out of context to make roughly the opposite point from the one he was making http://bactra.org/weblog/practical-peer-review.html …

thanks so much! I read the @cshalizi's post except for the last paragraph, having forgotten that he turns around and says that peer review is good. I still disagree but I removed his quote from the post because this is indeed misrepresentation.

this can be interpreted as an argument against peer review! :) I had >10 people read the draft before publication because prior experience shows that 2-3 careful readers almost never catch even the majority of problems

however 2-3 careful but critical readers are enough to shoot down a worthy but novel and difficult to understand idea...

Interesting. I’m a life science investor. I agree pace of innovation in lifesci is not slowing (it varies in domains tho). Re: Replication, have you seen the work suggesting experts in field tend to know which studies won’t replicate? Implying experts know what’s genuine.

this is not what that paper shows - I think authors overstate their results a bit! Experts are not at all good at predicting which research will replicate on pic: out of 8 studies that had >80% prob of replication only 3 replicate! @xoxo_meme_queen https://www.pnas.org/content/112/50/15343 …pic.twitter.com/rrK04xpNbK

On big vs small - have you seen this paper suggesting big teams = incremental / development and small teams = transformational / disruptive (But probably rarer). So you need both types. https://arxiv.org/ftp/arxiv/papers/1709/1709.02445.pdf … and my mini take -https://www.thendobetter.com/investing/2019/2/24/small-teams-vs-large-teams-and-innovation-effects …

Unsure. (Most/many things are correlation). But it ties in with with what many people anecdotally think about large companies vs small companies and how teaming might work.
