Most people presume gossiping to be lying or dirtying the water. I agree with you because I see it as letting others know your clearest, most honest evaluations. It's also just as important to let people know the good in others - particularly when they don't present well.

I think the biggest benefit of gossip, is to make people feel like their environment is transparent. An environment in which behaviour should be more prosocial.

Gossip is primarily used by the relatively powerless to coordinate information about the relatively powerful for their own protection. Whenever you see gossip being portrayed as low-status, remember that this is just the powerful trying to protect themselves from consequences.
