OSS is a donation of time and money from maintainers to corporations and communities. It's always worked that way and I'm pretty sure it'll never change.

If maintainers wanted money for their work then they would create a business and not give away code for free. Money is important in life, but it's clearly not the driver.

The reason why people like you and me should give to or sponsor a project is because we're reliant on it in production and want to de-risk its future, or because we admire or tangibly benefit from the project and community.
