A Facebook spokesperson tells me the company is now ending this research program on Apple’s platform. Facebook is also saying that less than 5% of participants in the program were teens and all minors had signed parental consent forms. https://tcrn.ch/2Wo1J4J

NEW: Apple now says it has revoked Facebook’s iOS developer certificate, which Apple intends to be used for a company’s employees to sideload apps without needing the App Store, not for the purpose FB used. Apple’s statement:pic.twitter.com/IvFHUfOZPq

This does NOT mean Apple is taking Facebook off the App Store. It just means that Facebook’s can’t use Apple’s Enterprise program to distribute iOS apps without the App Store. This is an aggressive flex on Apple’s part at a time when its relationship with FB is already strained.

It’s a safe bet that Apple has never revoked a company as large as Facebook from its enterprise certificate program. There are probably thousands of devices running apps Facebook has sideloaded this way. Now anything FB does on iOS has to go through App Store review.

This is incredible: None of Facebook’s internal iOS apps/betas (used by thousands of employees) are working right now because Apple just revoked the company’s certificate. They won’t open. For employees to use Facebook products on iOS they have to go download from the App Store.

There’s a lot of talk about how FB is this giant monopolistic force that will crush anything in its path. But this saga shows who really has the power in tech: underlying platforms (in this case Apple) AAPL just ground FB's internal development to a halt over a policy violation

NEW: Facebook has notified members of its mobile research program that it’s officially discontinuing the program on iOS. This is the program that violated Apple’s rules and resulted in FB’s internal apps being shut down for a couple days this week.
